5 TIPS TO HELP YOU GO GREEN IN PHILADELPHIA

Written by on 9.11.17

Philadelphia 2030 District is a new voluntary initiative designed to create a greener, cleaner Philadelphia. Under the initiative, the Delaware Valley Green Building Council aims to bring everyone together to reduce the city’s energy use, water consumption and transportation emissions by half by the year 2030.

If you are or plan to become a resident of one of Carlyle Property Management’s Philadelphia apartments, such as the Ardmore Arms Apartments or Old City Apartments, there are several ways you can get involved.

Here are five tips to help you get started.

1. Wash Only Full Loads

One of the easiest ways to save water and energy in your home is to run your washing machine or dishwasher only when you have a full load. You should also consider washing your clothes and dishes at a lower temperature and letting them air dry afterward.

2. Unplug Your Appliances

Leaving your electrical appliances on standby and plugged in wastes energy and money. Be sure to power off and unplug any appliances that don’t need to stay on after you’ve finished using them.

3. Lower Your Thermostat

Heating and cooling account for around half of the energy use in a typical Philadelphia home. Lowering your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees F before you go to sleep or while you’re away from home can help you reduce your energy use and improve your comfort.

4. Buy Local Produce

Buying local produce helps reduce your carbon footprint, as local produce travels shorter distances to reach you and doesn’t require extra preservation and packaging to stay fresh during transportation and storage. It also supports sustainable crop production and preserves agricultural land in your community.

5. Cook in Batches

Cooking meals in big batches can help you fill your oven and reduce the energy spent on heating and cooling. You can divide the cooked food into smaller portions and store each in an airtight container in your refrigerator or freezer.

Going green in Philly doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly. By following these simple tips, you can make your home and your city greener and cleaner!
