Finally the leaves are turning golden and crimson. New scents — a whiff of cider here, fallen pine cones there — fill the crisp, mid-autumn Philly air.
Philly has so many great things to do, and here are a few of our top picks for fall.
Put on your hiking boots and hike through the falling leaves along the nine miles of the Wissahickon Valley’s magnificent Gorge Loop Trail.
Philadelphia’s fall foliage is the most varied anywhere in the country, and nowhere is it more beautiful than along Forbidden Drive in the Wissahickon, which is part of the city’s expansive Fairmount Park system.
Or just enjoy a peaceful jog on the Forbidden Drive Trail, a five-and-a-half-mile conduit through the autumnal beauty of the park.
Pack a picnic lunch. Creekside benches and rustic pavilions await you. Or you can stop for a Roasted Portabello Sandwich accompanied by Celery Root Hummus at the Valley Green Inn.
About 15 minutes northeast, where 54th Street meets Lindbergh Boulevard, is Bartram’s Garden. Admission is free to all.
This is the country’s oldest botanical garden. Get to know the garden’s famous Franklinia alatamaha tree. It’s named for Benjamin Franklin, and it’s a stunning red this season.
Get your exercise in, too. Bartram’s Mile is the new path is at 56th and Lindbergh, where parking is available. Walk to the gorgeous fall skyline vistas at 56th Street Plaza.

Philadelphia’s marathon weekend happens November 22-24.
Although Philadelphia Marathon switches up its route slightly every year, the 30,000 runners who qualified will start and finish their brave journey under the autumn foliage of Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Cheer them on! Join the fans near the starting line at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, near Friendship Gate in Chinatown, near the Please Touch Museum, in Manayunk, and at the finish line at Kelly Drive. Check out the music and other entertainment planned at the 2019 Cheer Zones!
The weekend includes the free Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, November 22 from noon until 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 5. Meet an impressive array of vendors and exhibitors with plenty of advice and samples to share.

Starting November 17 and running through December 24, a German Christmas market will pop up in LOVE Park. Check out the website as the plan comes together.
